Styling Series: Common Bed Styling Mistakes

Are you getting the most out of your bedding? Picture this: you’ve spent time carefully comparing different quilt covers, coordinating the perfect sheets to match, even chosen an assortment pillowcases and cushions to tie it all together. But once you get everything home and assembled on the bed, it just isn’t living up to the image in your mind. Yes, it’s cute and comfy, but it could just do with that little bit of pizazz (does anyone still use that word? Just me?). We asked our go-to styling guru Fiona Gould to help us identify where we might be going wrong – and more importantly, how to fix it.

Without further ado, let’s make your bedroom styling the best it can be. Here are four common styling mistakes and their simple solutions:

#1: Cover your bases

Our first tip is a quick way to achieve a more polished look. “You never want to see your mattress at the end of the bed, Fiona tells us.

Don’t worry if your quilt doesn’t hit the flooryou just want to pull it down far enough to make sure the mattress isn’t peeking out. Not only will this look tidier, but it will give a full, plush look to your bed as well.

#2: Create (visual) layers

You always want to make the most of your layers – especially if you’ve taken the time to pick sheets in a complementary shade or fun pattern.

Up at the top end of your bed, give your quilt a simple fold to create an extra layer. If you’re using a flat sheet (we see you, non-flat-sheet-people), fold that over the top to finish it off. This will add dimension to your bed.

#3: Put your best pillow forward

Straighten up your Euros (the big square ones) and place your sleeping pillows closer to the back – these are often the flattest.

Layer your plushest pillows towards the front and style any decorative cushions in a slightly overlapped formation. Play around with different pillowcases, cushion designs and shapes until you find a combination you love.

#4: Give a fluff

Loosely drape a throw, blanket or bed cover over the foot of the bed. Give it a nice ruffle to really accentuate the texture and create a relaxed, inviting look. So simple, and oh-so comfy.
