Our Vision

Our sustainability journey began over
50 years ago when Sheridan was founded by passionate environmentalist, Claudio Alcorso.

Our enduring reputation for quality was founded on his belief that products must be designed to last, and last beautifully. We have a clear purpose. We’re actively working towards reducing the environmental impact in everything we do. We are making Sheridan synonymous with sustainability. We are designing a better tomorrow.

Our Goals

We recognise that sustainability is a journey that requires commitment, innovation and ongoing investment.

Every day, we are asking every part of our organisation to find better, more sustainable ways of working. Our 2025 and 2030 goals are a map to a better tomorrow. Together with our global HanesBrands family, we’re working to achieve our new set of long term goals.

• Supporting our global employee base, including those of our suppliers, through health and wellness, education, diversity and inclusion

• Leading our industry in ethical sourcing practices and remaining committed to human rights and responsible sourcing

• Supporting Australians at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness by donating sleep kits through our SleepSafe initiative

As part of HanesBrands, we have signed the Science-Based Targets Call-to-Action Commitment Letter and will develop science-based targets by 2022. As such, together with our global HanesBrands family we will:

EMISSIONS

• Continue to drive greenhouse gas reductions in our owned and key-supplier facilities, which we currently project will require an absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction of at least an additional 25% by 2030 to meet science-based targets.

• Continue to drive energy use reductions in our owned and key-supplier facilities, which we currently project will require us to reduce energy use at least an additional 25% by 2030 to meet science-based targets.

• Aim to achieve 100% renewable electricity in our owned operations by 2030.

WATER

• We aim to reduce water use by an additional 25% by 2030, off a 2019 baseline

WASTE

• We aim to achieve zero waste across our operations by 2025 and support key suppliers to do the same

Our Quality

Our Quality

The essence of sustainability is products that last a lifetime, and that is what Sheridan delivers.

Our testing standards exceed the international benchmark and we are ISO9001 compliant across our business, ensuring we meet the needs of our customers, while meeting statutory and regulatory requirements related to our products.

Our quality control headquarters is in South Australia. The expert team is managed by Yvonne Carbone, who’s been testing Sheridan products for over 40 years. No product leaves the technical lab without the team’s stamp of approval. For us, quality and sustainability go hand in hand.

  • Self Bags

    Self Bags

We are transitioning to packaging that is reusable or recyclable. This includes self-fabric bags that can be reused for storage or travel. When you have finished using them, these bags can also be returned to any Sheridan store as part of our textile recycling program.

  • Reduced PVC & Cardboard

    Reduced PVC & Cardboard

We are well on the journey of eliminating packaging made from PVC and replacing it with either reusable self-fabric bags or LDPE plastic, which is recyclable through soft plastics recycling programs. To date, we have removed more than 20 tonnes of PVC per annum from our business. We have also substantially reduced the cardboard labelling component on our bath and beach products. During 2020, this resulted in over 18 tonnes of cardboard being removed from the business.

Our online orders now arrive on doorsteps in recyclable cartons or in shipping satchels made from 90% post-consumer waste plastic. They feature the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) logo.

  • ARL & Soft Plastics

    ARL & Soft Plastics

98% of our products across all Boutique and Outlet stores now bear the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL). These labels educate consumers on how the packaging can be recycled.

Following the collapse of REDcycle, unfortunately there is no collection of soft plastics available for customers at the present time. Industry is working hard to identify pathways to create new schemes. In the meantime, customers are advised to dispose of their soft plastics in the landfill bin. You can also check your local council recycling options here: https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/councils

We are in the process of removing references to REDcycle on our packaging, and remain committed to achieving our sustainability goals of elminating single-use plastics in our product packaging.

Closing the loop

We are developing new thinking about our product lifecycles and designing with end-of-life in mind to ensure more of our products can be recycled or reused, minimising the potential waste going directly to landfill.

  • Recycling Program

    Recycling Program

In 2019, we implemented a recycling program into all Sheridan Boutique and Outlet stores in Australia. Customers can bring their pre-loved bed linen and towels (of any brand) into a collection point in store. They are then collected by a third party and sent to one of our partner factories who are certified to the Global Recycling Standard (GRS) to covert the donations into recycled fibres. The majority of materials collected through our program are cotton which are suitable for conversion to recycled yarn that can be repurposed into new products. Other donated materials which are not suitable for conversion to yarn are able to be used in non-woven products in other industries, such as insulation. As of December 2020, we have diverted 25,500kgs of textile waste from landfill.

  • Waverley Blankets

    Waverley Blankets

We’ve partnered with Australia’s oldest working textile mill, Waverley Mills, to produce a luxury blanket collection, where over 80% of the raw material is repurposed Sheridan cotton towels and recycled Australian wool.

The repurposed towels used in the process are a combination of customer returns and testing samples, while the recycled wool fibre is made up of predominantly merino wool shearing waste, unused wool fibre and factory off-cuts.

    ReTHREAD

In 2019, we launched the reTHREAD Collection, which includes a tea towel and apron, both crafted from 100% recycled cotton and recycled polyester yarns. Similar colours are grouped together at the fabric collection phase to ensure minimal dye use.

  • Community Partners

    Community Partners

For over 15 years, we’ve partnered with inspiring animal rescue and rehabilitation centres including Humbug Scrubs, Minton Farm and Monarto Safari Park, who reuse our fabrics when caring for animals. Together with these organisations, we’ve been able to divert hundreds of kilos of textile waste from reaching landfill.

Community

Community

One of the things we are most proud of is the connection that our brand has built to a community made up of our people, suppliers and consumers. This connection has been built up over 50-plus years of delivering the very best quality into people’s homes and lives.

As a company and a community, what ties us together is our collective hope for a better future for everyone.

    SleepSafe

In August 2019, we launched a national partnership with StreetSmart Australia, an organisation dedicated to raising vital funds and awareness for people experiencing, or at risk of experiencing, homelessness.

The partnership, in the name of SleepSafe, sees every Sheridan store across the country involved in fundraising. With every $15 raised a set of sheets and a towel is provided (via StreetSmart) to a person without a safe and secure place to call home. In the first 12 months of the program, we raised over $150,000, equivalent to 10,000 sleep kits.

  • Supply Chain

    Supply Chain

Each of our facilities must undergo a social compliance assessment before production begins, and then with ongoing annual assessments. To ensure accuracy and integrity, the initial and annual assessments are conducted by third-party auditors who measure the facilities’ performance using a detailed, scored set of criteria.

Our compliance program goal is to work with facilities to drive continuous improvement, but we will stop doing business with a factory if they fail to correct deficiencies in a timely manner or if “zero-tolerance” issues are discovered such as child labour, forced labor, sexual or physical harassment or abuse, or attempted bribery of an auditor.

  • Animal Welfare

    Animal Welfare

We are committed to ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare are adhered to in our supply chain. When animal products are used, we expect our suppliers to treat animals in a humane manner, which includes provision of appropriate comfort, shelter and freedom from distress or hunger. When sourcing feather and down, our partners must take reasonable steps to ensure the down and feathers used are a by-product of the food chain. Feather or down by live plucking is not permitted.
