Styling Series: How to Mix Cushions & Throws
Want to bring some personality to your lounge room without replacing furniture? It’s all in the accessories. One of the simplest yet most transformative ways to revamp your lounge room is through mastering the art of mixing cushions and throws. We’re firm believers that with the right accessories in the right places, you can style the magazine-worthy living space of your dreams (or should we say, your Pinterest board).
We’ve collaborated with interior stylist, Kerrie-Ann Jones to bring you some simple lounge styling tips — so you (and your lounge) are in good hands.
Tip #1: Start With a Colour Scheme
The first step in mixing cushions and throws is selecting a colour scheme that complements your existing decor. Choose one or two base colours that are either already a part of your current palette or a bold contrast that adds a fresh pop of colour. For example, if your room has a neutral palette like greys or beiges, adding cushions in shades of red or blue can bring energy and interest.
Here, Kerrie-Ann is combining different shades of reds and pinks — all from the same colour family, but a mixture of tones brings dimension to the look.
Tip #2: Play With Textures
Mixing textures creates a layered look that invites touch and adds depth to your lounge. Consider different fabrics like velvet for a feel of luxury, linen for a crisp natural touch, and chunky weaves for warmth and cosiness. A mix of different textures can enhance the tactile experience of your space. Your lounge should look as if it’s asking you to sit down and get comfy.
Tip #3: Vary Sizes and Shapes
Get that plush, magazine-ready look by styling cushions in a variety of shapes and sizes. Mixing different sizes and shapes — like a couple of larger square cushions along with rectangular breakfast cushions — creates an engaging visual hierarchy. This variance doesn’t just add to the aesthetic but also adds extra comfort for different seating preferences (an essential, if you ask us).
Tip #4: Include a Statement Moment
Every room needs its focal point. If you’re only just dipping your toes into some more daring or experimental styling choices, cushions are a small and budget-friendly way to try new trends and styles.
For her wild card pick, Kerrie-Ann couldn’t go past the dramatic finge detailing on our Romer Breakfast Cushion. An eye-catching moment, for sure.
Tip #5: Drape In a Throw
A throw not only serves the functional purpose of providing warmth but also acts as a decorative element. Choose a throw that ties the colour and texture of your cushions together. Here, Kerrie-Ann is opting for a neutral colour to bring a grounded feel to our colourful look. Not only does it freshen up the overall look, but it gives the eye a place to rest amongst all the playful colour.
Tip #6: Arrange with an Eye for Balance
While it can be tempting to overload with soft furnishings, the key is balance. Start with your largest cushions at the back and layer forward with smaller ones. Odd numbers often work best in creating a visually appealing arrangement. Play around with placements until you find a combination that looks effortless and inviting.
