Styling a kid’s bedroom is a fun challenge. One filled with plenty of colour, pattern and character. But striking the balance between your own personal taste and your young one’s current obsession (see: my niece’s undying love for Bluey and all things Bluey themed) can be tricky.
Our in-house textile designer, Marc, is someone who's cracked the code on this balancing act. Marc created the artwork for our Comet Quilt Cover Set — an intergalactic design from our latest Kids bedding collection. With a nod to nostalgia that never goes out of style, Comet will delight kids and parents alike. We interviewed Marc as part of our Meet the Maker series, to find out more about how Comet came to be.
What inspired the artwork for Comet? Was there a specific moment or idea that sparked this design?
“It kind of started with that childhood fascination with space — rockets, planets, the idea of exploring somewhere completely unknown. I also love those classic retro space illustrations, so the goal was to bring that feeling back in a way that felt a bit more refined. It’s a mix of nostalgia and curiosity — something that feels just as fun for kids as it does for adults.”
There are so many fun details in this illustration. How do you approach designing a print like this one?
“It usually starts with gathering references and setting the tone — figuring out how playful or detailed the print should feel. From there, I sketch out key elements like rockets and planets, keeping the shapes quite simple and graphic. Once the motifs feel right, I start arranging them into a repeat, making sure there’s a good sense of movement and balance. Then it’s refining the colour palette and scale, so everything works cohesively, especially across a larger surface like bedding.”
It sounds like there are plenty of elements to consider during the design process. Did you run into any challenges between those initial ideas and the final product?
“Scale is always a big one with bedding — you want the print to feel interesting up close but not overwhelming from a distance. Finding that balance took a bit of trial and error. The colour palette was another key consideration; it needed to feel fun and engaging for kids, but still soft and versatile enough to sit comfortably in a home. Making sure the repeat flowed nicely across the entire quilt was also something we refined a bit.”
Do you have a favourite detail in the Comet print?
“I really like the rockets — they’ve got a slightly retro feel without being too literal. They add a bit of personality to the print and help tie everything together. It’s one of those elements that gives the design its character.”
Creating a design that appeals to both kids and parents sounds like a fun challenge. How do you balance that?
“It's a bit of a balancing act. The subject matter can be playful but keeping the colours more considered and the shapes a bit more refined helps it feel calm and liveable. The aim was something kids get excited about, but parents are just as happy to have in the room.”
How does Comet fit into the broader Sheridan Kids collection this season?
“It fits nicely into the “flight” theme for the season, which explores different interpretations of movement and imagination — from sky to space. Space felt like a really fun direction to take that idea. It wasn’t overly rigid from the start, but as the designs developed, that theme really came through and helped connect the collection.”
What excites you most about designing for the Kids collection? Does it differ much from creating prints for our core collections?
“There’s more freedom to be playful and story-driven with kids’ designs. You can lean into imagination a bit more, which is really fun. At the same time, it still needs to feel cohesive with the brand, so it’s about finding that balance. Compared to core collections, there’s a bit more room to experiment with storytelling.”
Do you already have ideas for future designs in the Sheridan Kids collection? Any themes you'd love to explore next?
“There are always ideas floating around. I’d love to explore themes that mix imagination with nature — like underwater worlds or dreamlike landscapes — something that feels immersive but still calming enough for a bedroom setting.”
