For our third instalment of this season’s Meet the Maker series, we’re chatting with our textile designer, Marc. Marc has been part of our in-house design team for nine years, and today we’re highlighting his Falco print — a celebration of all things Australian summer.

What inspired the Falco design?

When designing Falco, I really wanted it to feel fun and beachy  like a laidback summer day in design form, something that feels playful and light.

I was inspired by the abstract shapes you find at the coastwaves, shifting sand, shells and sunshine. It’s full of flowing lines and soft forms that come together in a way that feels relaxed, fun and full of movement. It’s a little abstract, a little nostalgic, and all about bringing that summer feeling home.

Which mediums did you use the create Falco? Is there anything that helps you decide what's best suited to a design?

Before I started designing Falco, I knew I wanted it to be bold, bright, with blocks of colour that really let the abstract shapes shine. I started by sketching out the elements and painting them with gouache paint, a medium I enjoy for the rich, matte finish. Once I had all the pieces, I brought everything into Photoshop and started playing — tweaking the scale and compositionexperimenting until I was happy with the layout. It’s a fun process pulling it all together.

The medium you choose really depends on the audience you’re trying to speak to. Some designs call for a hand-painted, artistic feel, while others suit a clean, graphic look. Once you’ve locked in the mood and the overall vibe, the right medium tends to reveal itself. This graphic approach is great for when you need crisp lines, clean repeats and tight colour control. Perfect for anything modern, geometric or a bit technical.

Can you describe the mood of Brielle in three words?

Fun, vibrant, abstract.”

What do you love most about this design?

Theres something really fun about this design. It’s a playful mix of nature and geometry. The combination of organic shapes, bold patterns, and the checkerboard collage layout gives it an energetic vibe. It feels young and fresh, like it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the pops of colour totally bring it to life. It’s bold, a little unexpected, and definitely has a nod to the natural world — just with a twist.

How would you style Falco in your home?

Stick to a colour story, three or four key shades from the design. Vary how they show up across patterns and textures, that will help it feel intentional and not random. You could add in a fun throw or blanketmaybe something tasselled or chunky.

And always mix patterns with confidence. Keep the colours in the same realm to avoid it feeling chaotic. Striped or dotted sheets would make a pairing with this bed, think Bertie or Lockie.

If you'd like to bring a piece of Falco home — you're in luck. This one-of-a-kind design is available in a quilt cover set in sizes single through king, so it can be enjoyed in any bedroom.
