Did you know that every Sheridan product is designed in our Sydney Design Studio? Our in-house design team works year-round, not just to predict, but to pave the way for interior design trends. And in the case of our textile designers, they’re here in the studio every day, hand-painting, drawing, collaging and always experimenting — to bring you beautiful designs you won’t find anywhere else.
In this instalment of Meet the Maker, we’re chatting to Jenny — one of our aforementioned textile designers. She’s been with us at Sheridan for just shy of five years, and this season we’re shining the spotlight on her Perez design. Featured not one, not two, but three times in our home decor collection, Perez is a striking abstract floral. Read on to learn about the inspiration behind the design, and a peek behind the curtain of Jenny’s creative process.
Did you always know that you wanted to pursue a career in design? What drew you to textiles?
“I’ve always been drawn to the visual arts and knew early on that I wanted to pursue a creative career. It was during my time in Paris, working with a textile designer, that I discovered my true passion for textile design and realized this was the path I wanted to follow.”
Was there anything in particular that inspired your Perez design?
“A silhouette of a floral stem, captured in soft shadow.”
Can you tell us a bit about the mediums and techniques you used to create this design?
“The design began with hand-sketched floral silhouettes, which I then translated into a composition using torn paper collage to build the form. I finalized the artwork digitally in Photoshop.”
What does that process look like for you, deciding which medium is best for a certain design?
“Each print concept is unique, so I tailor my creative approach to suit the idea and its intended expression.”
Okay, here’s a quickfire one: describe Perez’s vibe in three words.
“Effortless, contemporary, bold.”
What do you love most about this design?
“I love the cardamon colourway — it’s a shade that’s been a real hero for us this season. It creates a brilliant, bold contrast with the floral silhouette.”
We're going to end on a hard-hitting question. How would you style Perez in your home?
“On my lounge! I love the two cushion designs that co-ordinate with the throw. Especially since they're two different sizes, styling them together adds instant interest and depth to the space.”
