How to Style a Monochrome Bedroom

A monochromatic bedroom aesthetic is perfect for creating a space conducive to sleep. Pared back, neutral colours (think greys, whites, even shades of black) are often described as soothing and calming, as well as offering complete and refined style to your space. We’ve enlisted some help from Fiona Gould – our Interior Stylist for Sheridan – to create a fresh and contemporary monochrome look for the bedroom.

We invite you to break the rules (even ours) and pick and choose what works for you; after all, the bedroom is a deeply personal space — and you want to create a space that celebrates all the uniqueness that is you.

Embrace the limitations

Styling a monochrome palette means working within some restraints colour-wise, and learning how to turn these limitations into strengths is the first step to having fun with your monochrome styling. When it comes to making a sophisticated statement, you can’t go wrong with black and shades of grey. These classic shades add an element of refinery. Soothing and captivating, our Darley collection boasts a soft grey base with touches of black and white. Create a coordinated look in the bedroom with the matching set; Quilt Cover, Pillowcases and European Pillowcases

Invite pattern and texture into your space

To bring added dimension to your look, we recommend playing with patterns and texture to give depth and visual interest to your monochrome bedroom aesthetic. Darley is perfect for this, utilising an engineered stripe in a contrasting texture (pattern and texture all in one, pretty good, huh?). Invite further tactility by utilising accessories — like cushions in contrasting fabrics and textures. Try pairing your quilt cover with an Abbotson Linen square cushion in carbon to pick up on the dark stripes, or Otway with its textured linework.

Why stop at one set of stripes? Adding an unexpected sprinkle of pattern makes for an exciting and bold statement. Try mixing in a geometric pattern, like in our Lankin cushion, with its unique embossed finish and dual-tone design. Knitted finishes like the Almar cushion will also help to bring a cosy, inviting look and feel to your space.

Incorporate layers

So you’re ready to embrace your sleek, contemporary side, but you’re feeling unsure about how to style a monochrome bed? One way to break up the style of a monochrome room is to incorporate layers on your bed.

Start with sheets and layer your way up. To really bring home the monochrome theme, consider coordinating your bed with crisp white sheets like the Bayley Washed Percale sheet set.

Finish off the look with a cosy throw, slung effortlessly over the base of the bed, like our Almar throw, or the Sano linen throw for something lighter. This will help to soften the look — both to look at, and to touch.

Channel your personality into your space

Own your space by bringing your personality and style into the interiors. Monochrome doesn’t have to be plain, bare or boring — in fact, it can be just the opposite. Here, Fiona pairs our monochromatic bed with a green rug, for a pop of colour in the space. In fact, monochrome interiors are the perfect setting to let your favourite statement pieces shine. Experiment with different shades, patterns and textures to find out what works best for you.
