The guide to buying your perfect sheet
Linen, cotton percale, sateen, Egyptian cotton - what to choose? With so many variations of sheeting, it can be difficult to know what's right for you.
Here at Sheridan, we acknowledge how emotive, complicated and individual choosing bed linen can be. However, if we start from the beginning, there are three unbreakable rules that we stand by. All bed linen should be made from a natural fibre, it should feel amazing, and it should represent quality.
Stop counting threads, it’s all about feel
For many of us, thread count can be a little confusing. Is a high number always better? Our quality control manager, Yvonne Carbone says thread count is merely a measure of sheet weight. The higher the thread count, the heavier the sheet becomes. The quality of a sheet is defined by the choice of cottons, the quality of the spun yarn and weave and the finishing of the product.
Percale – crisp and breathable
From our foundation range of sheeting, we can offer you our 300tc Classic Percale sheets, for a crisp light feel. The compact signature weave makes for a lightweight and breathable sheet. Smooth to touch and highly durable, a percale feels dry against the skin and will soften wash after wash.
Sateen – silky and indulgent
Crafted using 100% cotton, sateen sheets typically offer a higher thread count, giving them a beautiful sheen finish. To create high quality sheets fit for a five-star hotel, sateen is crafted by weaving four threads over and one thread under. In comparison to percale, sateen sheets are slightly heavier and more tightly woven. For those looking for indulgence, our 1000tc Hotel Luxury Sheet Set is made with superior quality cotton, creating the ultimate sleeping environment.
Egyptian cotton – luxurious yet lightweight
Lighter than sateen, Egyptian cotton is finely spun to ensure maximum durability, while feeling lightweight on the skin. Perfect for all season use, Egyptian cotton also works to retain body heat during the cooler seasons. Our crisp 500tc Egyptian Blend Sheet Set is made using 100% cotton yarn and finished with a minimal header detail.
Tencel® – sustainably soft
The appeal of our Tencel® Sheet Set is in its inimitable softness, beautiful sheen and relaxed, draped look. Although a manmade fibre, eco-friendly Tencel® has a reputation for sustainability, relying on very minimal water usage during production. With a silky smooth feel, it’s more gentle than regular cotton and wool, reducing the likelihood of irritation. This impressive fibre is also highly breathable and temperature regulating, allowing you to stay cool in summer and warm throughout winter.
Cotton – light and effortless
For a simple and comfortable sheet that softens over time, you can’t go past a classic cotton set. The epitome of undone luxury, our Nashe Sheet Set has been intensively stonewashed to create a worn in effect that’s effortlessly comfortable. As these sheets don’t require ironing, they’re the perfect choice for those who appreciate easy care.
Washed chambray – comfortable and lived in
Imagine the comfort of waking up in your favourite lived-in shirt. Low maintenance chambray sheeting is the definition of easy, contemporary living. Our Reilly Sheet Set, crafted using vintage washed chambray, is cosy and soft. With no need to iron, a simple tumble dry compliments the chambray tousled look.
Linen – light and durable
If you prefer the feel of a light and airy sheet, linen is the perfect fabric for all seasons, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. Highly durable, linen gradually softens, becoming more comfortable over time. Crafted using 100% Belgian linen fibres, our Abbotson Linen Fitted Sheet is a finely spun linen, with a laidback aesthetic. More durable than many cotton percales, linen is ultra comfortable and designed to last.
Flannelette – warm and cosy
Nothing says winter warmer like flannelette sheeting. Crafted from quality cotton, brushed on both sides, our Flannelette Sheet Set has an incredibly soft texture. Ideal for cosying up during the colder months, this warming fabric is another easy care option that will stand the test of time.
