The Top 5 Interior Design Trends of 2023

If at any time in 2022, you opened a social media app on your phone or typed their URLs into your computer, then you would’ve seen it. Even if only for a second.

“Core”.

Specifically, “something-core”. For most of us, it began with cottagecore, which reached public consciousness sometime in 2020 (no guessing as to why). There’s been normcore, gorpcore, balletcore, Barbiecore — there was even the “frazzled 2000s English woman aesthetic”, dubbed Richard Curtis-core

And although most of these started on TikTok, and were in terms of fashion, they quickly made their way to the homewares world, fast-moving interior design trends. Just so you know, Richard Curtis-core interiors would’ve definitely involved strewn crochet blankets on old leather couches, piled with velvet cushions found at antique stores or on *exotic* travels abroad.

It’s a peak of niche, fast-cycling trends borrowed from various subcultures; once the name has been solidified for one, people have already moved on to the next. And in the world of fast fashion and fast homewares, that also includes buying things from each and every trend, only for it to be out of date before you had a chance to set up that last candle (or precariously place that last, worn velvet cushion).

The thing about all these “cores'' is that eventually, they will cycle back around. What goes up, must come down, what was in and then out, will eventually be in again.

On this side of it all, we’re firm believers that everything in your home should last — and last beautifully. That’s how we design our products. No matter the season, quality and longevity are key.

So we can tell you what longer, overarching interior trends to look out for — oh, and we will! At the same time, we encourage you to make thoughtful, conscious choices about your home. What works with you, your space, and whatever “core” aesthetic that you, personally, resonate and align with.

And that’s regardless of whether it’s currently popping off on TikTok.

1. Rinsing Ritual

Take that, cores! This one’s outside of you altogether. (Unless I spoke too soon, and showercore is on its way).

Pinterest Predicts has said this year is the year of the shower — searches for ‘shower routine aesthetic’ and ‘home spa bathroom’ have gone up by 460% and 190% respectively. It’s also a place where you can take some time for self-care; we encourage it.

Some things about your shower at home you may not be able to change — the size, the tiles, the water pressure. Other things, you can. Like the towels used, the robes you wrap yourself up in, even the bath mat. It’s a simple way to dip your toe into 2023 homewares trends, without over-committing.

While towels may be trending, our Design Team is making a call on the fibres and fabrics used throughout: going back to basics. Plant-derived cottons and linens, that look and feel good.

There’s also a moment for playfulness and exuberance; think checkerboards and statement stripes. Staying groovy in your staples. There’s no need to retile the whole bathroom floor, with accessible and transformative offerings.

2. Cocooning Moments

Self-care and taking care of your wellbeing aren’t trends — they’re essentials, in fact — but there’s a new way to take care of yourself that relies wholly on one sense.

We’re talking about touch, baby.

As in, what you surround yourself with in the home (and sometimes out), the texture of what you wear, sleep in (sleep on)...which is why we’re including it in this list of interior trends for 2023

Coming straight from our Design Team, it’s time to engage in sensory indulgence, with surfaces, fabrics and our surroundings taking on an exaggerated texture.

This year will bring loungewear and wearables so comfortable, you’ll find it hard to believe you’re not still in bed — or not cocooned in a soft, fluffy cloud. And the best thing is, Sheridan’s classic sense of style has been brought to these tactile moments; wear outside the house just as easily as you’d wear inside the house.

Did we mention this cocooning moment is for travel, too? We all know it’s overdue — comfortable travel is a trend everyone can get behind.

3. Works of Art

You may have picked up on the fact that we love a two-for-one moment here at Sheridan. And we’re not the only ones — trend forecasting company, WGSN, names ‘Artistic Impressions’ and ‘Cutout Collage’ as two key decor trends in 2023, specifically in the world of print and pattern.

Why? Because of the aforementioned two-for-one moment; you’re getting homewares that double as a piece of art, a decorative moment that doesn’t need to be held against a wall asking “Does this look right? Does it look straight to you?” until you find the exact perfect spot to hang it.

These painted and sketched prints and patterns, highlighting work done by hand and showcasing one-of-a-kind art, will be seen across bedding, decor and loungewear this season. And let’s be honest, seasons to come — it’s what our Design Studio is best at.

The second piece of this two-part interior design trend? Collages — but no scissors and glue are required here. Overlaid abstract shapes and forms, that experiment with colour, scale and form. There are more soothing laidback moments, as well as maximalist designs that count towards the everlasting movement of dopamine dressing

And, in fact, Pinterest Predicts says that, within the home, maximalist self-expression will continue to rise — our bedrooms will act as creative havens, where we can experiment with aesthetics.

‘Funky house décor’ has seen an uptick of a mere 695% in search. No biggie. And we’ll all be mixing this newness with what we already have…or can thrift. ‘Hipstoric homes’ will see vintage meet modern, for “eclectic interior design vintage” — a term that’s risen 850%.

And a work of art helps with this self-expression, with a sprinkling of maximalism — especially when you get brave with layering different textures, prints and colours atop it, using cushions, bed covers, throws and more.

4. Opulent Extravagance

We’ve already talked about the overarching ‘sensory indulgence’ that we’ll all be, well, indulging in this year. And now, we’re combining touch with sight — this 2023 homewares trend is all about surrounding yourself with things that are just as beautiful to look at, as they are to rest amongst.

But more than that, they’ve brought a bit of drama to the conversation — some exaggerated texture. Keep an eye out for burnished or textured metallics with intricate contrast detailing. Materials like cotton sateen and TENCEL™ Lyocell feel silky-smooth underneath your fingertips, the ultimate if you’re looking to feel a *touch* refined.

Techniques, like jacquard weaves or matelassés, are inspired by the textural side of nature; the crunch of an autumn leaf underfoot, or lightly running your finger across the ridges, curves and swirls of a beach shell.

You dress yourself to the nines for a night out — why not dress your bed up the same way for a night in? As for the home decor colour trends of 2023 you should keep an eye on…outside of the metallics, of course.

Rich, luscious jewel tones; shades of burnt butter. And, as Harry Styles’ song goes, “You’re so golden” — and what’s more opulent than that?

5. That ‘70s Styling

Speaking of Harry Styles — or a decade he’s sartorially focused on — the ‘70s are back. We told you, what goes around comes back around.

There’s no need to redo your floors with linoleum or vinyl, or even bring back the shag carpets. And that’s saying nothing of the floral upholstered sofas, or fringed lamps.

Instead, this 2023 decor trend is about a nostalgic — and comforting — look back on the best of the decade, a contemporary retro resurgence (yes, we know that’s an oxymoron). As for what you’ll find this time round, that you can continue styling in 2024, 2025, and so on…?

We’ve got another few home decor colour trends for the year — bright shades, but with an earthy undercurrent. Winter pinks, khaki-cool greens, autumnal oranges and sunny shades of yellow. Warm-toned hues that bring a sense of comfort.

One specific call out from WGSN: iconic print and patterns. Designs have that 70s ditsy element, that’s both charming and tongue-in-cheek. Our focus? Floral repeats, micro-dots, and pinstripes. All playing into the wider trend, but have staying power for future seasons.
